Orange Marilyn

Silkscreen ink and acrylic on canvas by Andy Warhol, 1962. One of the first canvases in Warhol's Marilyn series, produced in the weeks following Monroe's death on 4 August 1962. Orange ground with a high-contrast photomechanical transfer of Monroe's face. Sold at Sotheby's New York in 1998 for $17,327,500, then a record for the artist.

Scholarly Significance

Extend the Warhol / Pop Art cluster with the 1962 Orange Marilyn, one of the earliest works in Warhol's foundational Marilyn series and a major public auction result ($17.3M, Sotheby's 1998).
