·Rembrandt was present at an Amsterdam auction in 1639 where Raphael's Portrait of Baldassare Castiglione was sold; he made a sketch noting the pose.
·He also knew Titian's Portrait of a Man (then attributed to Ariosto) via an engraving.
·Signed and dated on the ledge: 'Rembrandt f. 1640'.
·Acquired by the National Gallery from the Wynn Ellis Bequest in 1876.
