Walking on a Mountain Path in Spring

Album leaf attributed to Ma Yuan (Southern Song, c. 1195 CE). Ink and light colour on silk; National Palace Museum, Taipei. Depicts a scholar-poet walking on a mountain path in spring, accompanied by a servant carrying a qin (zither). The composition uses Ma Yuan's signature 'one-corner' (馬一角) style — subject matter placed in the lower-right corner with the rest of the composition open to atmospheric space. An inscription by Empress Yang identifies the subject. One of the finest surviving works of Southern Song academy painting.
