A Goryeo dynasty illuminated Buddhist manuscript: frontispiece for the Avatamsaka Sutra (Hwaeomgyeong / 화엄경), Korea, c. 1340 CE. Gold and silver ink on deep indigo-dyed paper depicts the Buddha assembly in an architectural setting — Shakyamuni on a lotus throne preaching to assembled bodhisattvas and celestial beings. One of the supreme examples of Goryeo Buddhist book art.
