·Subject: Vera Savishna Mamontova (1875-1907), 11 years old, daughter of industrialist-patron Savva Mamontov.
·Painted at the Abramtsevo estate near Moscow, summer 1887; worked on for about three months.
·Serov: wanted to capture 'the freshness one always senses in nature but which one never finds in pictures.'
·Awarded the Moscow Society of Art Lovers prize 1888.
·Vera Mamontova died of pneumonia at 32 in 1907; Serov was deeply affected.
