Church of the Light
Church (1989) designed by Tadao Ando, Ibaraki, Osaka, Japan. A simple concrete box interrupted by a cross-shaped slot in the east wall through which natural light pours. Awarded the annual prize of the Architectural Institute of Japan.
Scholarly Significance
The Church of the Light is Tadao Ando's most celebrated small building and the canonical expression of his use of bare concrete and natural light as spiritual materials.
