Trophy Head from Battlefield Context, 16th century — Pitt Rivers Museum, Oxford

Cast brass head representing a defeated enemy chief or warrior, likely placed at the Oba's palace gate following military victories, 16th century. Distinct from the commemorative altar heads (iyunmwun oba), these heads display different formal characteristics — open mouths, more animated expressions — reflecting their different iconographic function. The Pitt Rivers Museum, Oxford, holds Benin Bronzes acquired from the 1897 dispersal and through later purchases.
