Barcelona Pavilion
German Pavilion for the 1929 Barcelona International Exposition, designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Demolished 1930; rebuilt 1986. A spatial masterpiece of flowing marble, glass, and steel planes on a reflecting pool. The Barcelona Chair was designed specifically for it.
Scholarly Significance
The Barcelona Pavilion is a paradigm of modernist spatial minimalism. Its free-flowing plan and 'less is more' doctrine shaped all subsequent International Style architecture.
